Two names, one street

Kalelarga is the familiar name of Široka ulica, the broad street through the historic centre. The name derives from the Italian Calle Larga, meaning wide street. Use Široka ulica when checking an address; expect Kalelarga in conversation and visitor descriptions. Both refer to the same central urban axis, not to two separate attractions.

Why a street deserves its own guide

Its importance is social as well as architectural. The tourist board describes Kalelarga as a place bound to the city’s identity and everyday life. Walk it as a connection between public spaces rather than a monument with a single best viewpoint. Look along the street towards the cathedral tower, then notice how side lanes interrupt the broad, direct route.

A simple way to walk it

Begin at Narodni trg, continue through the pedestrian centre along Široka ulica and let the route open towards the cathedral and Forum. Our six-stop itinerary measures about 280 metres from the Narodni trg waypoint to its Kalelarga waypoint, then about 110 metres to the Forum. These are specific route legs, not a claim about the full historical length of the street.

Slow down without blocking the street

Allow 15–30 minutes if you want to pause, an editorial estimate rather than a required visiting time. Keep entrances and the walking line clear, especially when taking photographs or stopping with a group. The street is an outdoor public space with no admission ticket. Individual shops, cafés and nearby churches set their own opening hours. For a quieter-looking photograph, try an earlier visit without assuming the street will be empty.
